Hi. I am Joan Garry and I am a news addict. In the months and weeks leading up to Election Day, I couldn't help myself.

CNN, realclearpolitics.com, five-thirty-eight.com. I didn't just check in at these sites. It got to the point where I would become furious at the...

I've been working on algebraic equations with my daughter Kit. She kind of hates them. I kind of like them. They are so tidy. To solve for "x", you have to keep each side of the equation in balance. Maybe it's because I'm a Libra -- I like the whole...

You Know What I'm Saying?

I spent the weekend canvassing in Pittsburgh. I was part of an LGBT posse from NYC. We drove (a long way). Our charge was twofold. First, we would canvass in a very poor African American neighborhood. Pro-Obama but historically very low turnout. I guess you have to feel like you...

I Was Born in a Small Town.

I was born in Amityville, New York. Small town. About the size, let's say, of Wasilla, Alaska. My mom was born there too. She's 81 and still lives there. Plays bridge two or three times a week. She has a wide circle of friends, some of whom she has known...

The Chickens are Voting For Colonel Sanders

Posted September 3, 2008 | 09:54 AM (EST)

I thought the Log Cabin Republicans would withhold their endorsement of John McCain. Maybe I just hoped they would. After all, they withheld their endorsement of President Bush in 2004. So I thought it was possible.

In making its endorsement today, the group pointed to the Arizona senator's opposition to...

What Americans Think of Sarah Palin

Posted September 1, 2008 | 12:32 PM (EST)

My friend and neighbor Bobbi came over for a visit yesterday. We were both back in New Jersey after our trip to Denver for the convention. Our primary agenda item was to recap our respective experiences at what we both understood was an historic convention and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We...

Juvenile Protesters

Some folks here in Denver try to avoid the protesters. They take a circuitous route, they keep talking with their chums, they look the other way. Lots of people make light of the chants and the signs.

I've been a protester so I pay attention.

And I think because of...

It's Different When It Isn't Different At All

One day last week I opened the mail and found myself rifling through the usual mix of catalogs, bills and direct mail pieces. There was the direct mail addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Joan Garry and then of course, the letter addressed to Eileen's deceased mother informing her that her...

What is it That Jesse Jackson Wants to Cut Off?

Posted July 10, 2008 | 12:15 PM (EST)

The press is all over Jesse Jackson's unplugged comment. And I so appreciate the media working so hard to shelter me from the actual comment. They left some blank spaces when they printed the story. I was grateful. I have delicate ears.

From what I am able to gather,...

"Tell All The Drag Queens to Stay Home"

A few years back, Bill O'Reilly suggested to me that gay pride parades were a big problem for the gay rights movement. These parades shoot your movement in the foot, he told me in front of his faithful viewers one night in June (including my mother). His argument of course,...

How I Feel About Hillary Clinton, My Ex.

So Hillary is as close to an ex as I plan to have.

David Paterson's Vision

How Could You Not Like Oprah's Big Give? Here's How

I have now seen three episodes of the new reality show Oprah's Big Give. It's good that Oprah isn't full of herself, isn't it? To be fair, she probably doesn't want to confuse it with anybody's else's big give.
