What is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for if not a situation such as this? But don't count on this administration to do anything to contain the price of oil and thereby bring consternation to their cronies in the oil patch.
Rep. Ed Markey, 08.22.2008
Bush and the Republicans have thwarted attempt after attempt by Democrats to pop the speculative oil bubble and provide relief to consumers. Each time, Republicans sided with Big Oil over the American people.
David Sassoon, 08.20.2008
With access to global oil fields more restricted than ever, the oil companies are not going to be satisfied with the meager pickings from offshore wells.
Raymond J. Learsy, 08.21.2008
Our valiant oversight heroes examined Swiss company VITOL's books last month and found that VITOL was more of a speculator holding oil contracts than a means of lining up the actual delivery of fuel.

Were we to learn that the supply of oil is limitless, the emperor's clothes would evaporate and the price of oil would collapse.
Harry Shearer, 08.14.2008
Why are the Democrats in Congress, and the Obama campaign, still fluttering with anxiety to join the "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" campaign introduced and orchestrated by Newt Gingrich?
Raymond J. Learsy, 08.14.2008
Clearly something is afoot in the attempt to quash any and all discussion of the "Abiotic Oil Theory."

In 2006, we opened for drilling the Outer Continental shelf estimated to contain more than 40 billion barrels of oil. Oil prices were$60 a barrel then. In the two years since, prices have more than have doubled.

John McCain may not know what gas costs or when he last pumped any, or performed any other act not connected to politics or outpatient care, but he's had hundreds of town hall meetings.
David Fiderer, 08.17.2008
Lou Dobbs signed on to the Republicans' disinformation campaign, but what about legitimate journalists? Who in the mainstream media has enough guts to say a lie is a lie?
Colin Beavan, 08.19.2008
My disappointment comes from the fact that politicians on both sides of the aisle still don't really get that climate change is a planetary time bomb. They still think it's a political football.
Jeremy Jacquot, 06.23.2008
McCain's shameless flip-flop on offshore drilling marks just the latest backtrack in a long series of environmental policy revisions by the presumptive Republican nominee.
Michael T. Klare, 08.14.2008
Moscow mainly relies on Russia's own energy resources for financial wealth and political advantage, but it also seeks to dominate the delivery of oil and gas from the Caspian states to the West.

And on the domestic front this is exactly what will happen if we allow access to offshore and in protected wildlife areas.
The oil will go to the highest bidder.
So don't even pretend to think that drilling in Anware will solve anything, cause it won't.
and for this our sons and daughters died? Thanks, guys.
"As security improves, Iraq is trying to bring in foreign companies to help increase crude output..."
Looks like Iraq is revisiting the deals that were in the works before the invasion, you know, the invasion that was supposed to derail all those foreign Oil firms' contracts for Iraq's oil once the sanctions were lifted? Yeah, so it looks like "all options are on the table" with regard to oil contracts now. Too bad for Exxon/Mobil/BP/Shell et all. Guess we can't effectively limit Iraq's options anymore. Some of the puppet strings must have popped off.
Anybody thinking that China isn't going to insist on Chinese troops in Iraq for this deal? Maybe that's the selling point. Once again, our screw-up is China's gain. Look how this war has strengthened China and diminished the US on so many fronts.
Guess who OWNS America.
I wonder how bin Laden feels about China.
It does not matter. There are a lot more Chinese than radical Muslims. And if his people show up in China, the Chinese will find easy ways to squelch them. Literally.
And yet again "the killer" stuns us all with his elementary playground take on world politics.
Bully to you. Bully to you.
