As everyone seems to be watching pennies this holiday season it follows that we might see a swing away from giving "stuff" to giving something more meaningful.
Our antidote to traffic snarls and short-tempered shoppers? We put our money where our values are by making donations in friends' or family members' names to worthy organizations.
Once upon a time, things were made to serve a purpose. Consider the light bulb, the compass, and the cardiac pacemaker. No doubt necessity was once the mother of invention.

Only 6 of the originally planned 150 homes have been built? Is that a typo?
Last I heard it was eight. I think (I am really unsure of this number but it is in the neighborhood) for Habitiat for Humanity New Orleans Musicians Village is about 100. St. Bernard Project has rebuilt 154 homes. That is it for the big rebuilding projects in NOLA. Over 200,000 homes destroyed and that is it. But New Orleanians are "whining" if they complain. Go figure.
I'm glad Brad is helping the people of New Orleans. But does anybody find it strange that he didn't support Obama until Obama's acceptance speech? If he went to the acceptance speech, he must have supported him, but he didn't endorse? Did Angelina gag him?
Also, why can't they dress Zahara as nicely a their white daughters? Why won't they comb her hair? They are definitely showing that they value her much less than their biological white children? I'm worried for her.
It's great to see someone rich and famous use his good fortune to help his neighbors. Good on ya, Brad Pitt.
Yes, finally. One wonders what rich and famous Mr. Pitt was busy doing between 1990-2004. Spending his money on face peels and $1000 cargo pants to be exact.
Likable actor, family man .....
Charity work? Establish a foundation, perks are tax breaks, PR/publicity, raising the salary per film, motivation ... questionable.
Balanced against other actor's who are involved in family and public service without becoming a front page attraction.
I'll celebrate the unsung hero's who sit daily with hospice patients, whose names we'll never know.
Beautifully said and very moving. It reminds me of this guy I dated in College who would volunteer 2 times/week at the University hospital unbeknownest to most people. He would cuddle babies who were sick or abandoned. There are millions of people who every day do amazing things without saying - "look at me everyone, here I am."
I love Mr. Pitt's facial hair on this cover. I bet it tickles up close! Goodness he wears every look so well. Great Job in New Orleans! My new hero!
